Falling for Caramel

Oh the days of Fall are upon us. Cardigans, football games, soups & stews, earlier bed-times for the kiddos (really like this one), cool crisp afternoons and mornings. I get this oohey-gooey feeling when fall approaches. Perfect feeling to go with my salted carmel apples I tried my hand at this week.

Sharing is so much fun! I made these mini-salted caramel apples for my daughters teachers at her school for Back-to-School-Night.  My daughter and I had a blast making them and I learned just how sticky of a situation you can get yourself into with caramel and plastic treat bags!

I actually found unwrapping 2 large bags of caramels almost relaxing. There is something about the texture of the little cellophane wrapped caramels, and the crinkle sound they make when unwrapping them.  Now if only stabbing the apples with the craft sticks were as relaxing...all apples are not created equal and do not stand up straight, if your a perfectionist you will take issue with this. I kinda like the lopsided look of the sticks myself.

What is harder I wondered the melting or dipping? I found the melting of the caramels to be a little more intense. Remember when we were kids and they had the sheets of caramel and you just folded them over the apples? This is not that easy, but way more fun!

I could have just melted the Kraft caramels and called it a day, but I have been a little, ok a lot obsessed with Salted Caramel. Have you had it? Seen it?  Heard of it? It's everywhere people, and all that it contains is caramel with a little sea salt thrown in.  Genius! Actually it's a little more than just adding salt, I added: Cream, Vanilla, Kosher Salt, and Butter- at the very end. So heavenly scrumptious.

See the rubber mat under my fresh dipped apples? It is called a Sil-Pad...a must for every baker. the apples pop right off when they have cooled. Nothing sticks to this stuff!

Drizzle with a little chocolate, Refrigerate for about 1-2 hours,  bag them up, then your ready to go..wait not true, bagging them is the hardest part. Unless you dip your apples in something like nuts, or another topping they will stick horribly to the plastic bag!!  I haven't found a way around this yet, but that's why you give a Wet-One towelette with them, I mean it is an Oohey-Gooey Caramel Apple, sticky fingers comes with the territory.

Recipe for Salted Caramel Apples- By Me!
*makes about 12 mini apples

-Mini Gala or Jazz apples from Trader Joe's, or anywhere that sells the mini ones.
-3 to 4 Tablespoons of Heavy Cream
-1 Tablespoon Vanilla
-1 Tablespoon Sea Salt or Kosher Salt
-1 Tablespoon of Butter
-1 17 oz. bag Kraft Caramels or 2 9.5 oz bags
-lollipop/cookie Craft Sticks, or popsicle sticks

Step 1) Wash all Apples throughly, I like to use a fruit and veggie was by "eat cleaner", love this stuff! Dry them very well or caramel will slide off. Stick apples with craft stick from top just to center.
Step 2) unwrap all caramels and put in double boiler
Step 3) Add the cream, and salt
Step 4) Melt on medium heat, stirring occasionally, will take about 15 minutes
Step 5) When all the caramels have melted add the butter, then turn down heat to lowest setting, keep stirring so the butter mixes in completely, this helps to give those apples the shiny look!
Step 6) coat apples, it helps to tilt your pot then let the caramel run off apple and tap apple of side of pot to remove excess. You can also scrape bottom of apple, because more caramel will slide down when cooling.
Step 7) Refrigerate for about an hour to 2 hours for carmel to harden.
Step 8) Enjoy!!

September Photo Tip: Action Shots

September is the perfect month to take action shots of your kiddos or loved ones. The weather is usually fantastic and the colors gorgeous, soccer games are in full swing. I am not a professional photographer by any means, but have been following the tips and tricks of Kristen Duke, who is a professional photographer, and wow has it made a difference in my photos! Not only in the picture, but also in how I think before snapping my shot now.  One tip Kristen Duke gives is to photograph your kids doing physical things: running, jumping, twirling, etc.  Every digital camera has a mode for action pictures, it's usually a icon of a person running.  Set your camera to this, because otherwise your photo will come out blurry! Then play Simon says with your kids or subject...tell them to run, jump, do the hula, even blowing bubbles and chasing them!

We went for a family walk by the Harbor and there is this long stretch of path my daughter loves to run down. I decided to try out my action shots there. What do you think?

I love how her curls are bouncing and there is so much movement in the picture! My camera has a mode to take multiple bursts in 5 seconds, it helps to catch those action moments.
Another idea I had was to catch her sliding down one of those inclosed tube slides...

It was so much fun shooting these! Plus she loved having to go down the slide over and over! I was having too much fun to stop there and my husband always wanted to know what it would look like to be frozen in mid air, so just for fun check this one out...

Would be pretty cool if I photoshopped in a skateboard!
Will have to learn how to do that next.
Go on and get out there and take some action shots! Mess around with your cameras settings. The only way to learn is to play around and try it!

Old and New Again

If you have children than I am 100% sure you have heard the phrase "When you were a baby..." out of the mouths of your mothers, aunts, and grandmothers. Even if you don't have kids you have probably at least once in your life had that phrase directed at you. Sometimes it is followed by really good practical advice, sometimes it is not as useful because we have discovered other ways of doing things since say 1970!  Almost always though your mother's advice and your grandmothers advice comes from the roots of using things already around the house as a solution to multiple problems or tasks.  One of these around the house items that I have found is "Old and New again" is: Baking Soda!!!  You most likely have a box of it in your fridge right now, or at least in your cabinet for baking with. There are so many uses for baking soda it is mind boggling.

I have discovered that Baking Soda and babies are a two for one deal! When I had my first child she had severe eczema outbreaks and we spent tons of money buying the expensive creams and oatmeal baths that promised to ease her itching and pain, but to no avail did not.  It wasn't until one day after venting my frustration to my mother that she said the dreaded phrase "You know...when you were a baby, we just put baking soda in the bath, it cured everything from diaper rash to sunburn, you should try it." I thought if it was that easy why had no pediatrician told me this? Or better yet her allergist? Trying to tell my mother that something won't work is next to impossible, so the next night I put my itchy, cranky daughter in a baking soda bath. After all what did I have to loose? The result was pure bliss on my child's face after bath time.  We did baking soda bath 2x a week after that, and still use it when she has an outbreak!  Thanks mom, I guess some advice is timeless.
Another useful tip is when you have a diaper pail in your home you can buy these fridge pals and stick them to your diaper champ on the inside, or you can just sprinkle a tablespoon of baking soda in bottom of diaper bag!

Much less expensive than those plastic tiny discs you can buy at Babies R Us!
Check out this list of other useful uses of baking soda below!

Piperlime

If you watch Project Runway then I am sure you have noticed the Piperlime accessory wall. I first discovered Piperlime about a year ago while shopping for infant clothes at Baby Gap. The salesclerk was going on and on about the unbelievable prices of the shoes online.  I decided to check it out and was so glad I did. The company is owned by the Gap/Banana Republic/Old Navy Group, and I must say is one of the better online shopping experiences. I have purchased 3 pairs of shoes so far at great discounts. They offer free shipping and if you don't like what you get you simply ship it back in same box, they provide the label and they refund your money! What more can a busy momma ask for?
Check them out..you won't be sorry.

DIY: Pinwheels & Pearls Babyshower Invitations!

I am co-hosting a Baby Shower this month and was in-charge of the invitations. I love handmade invites. I thought I would share with you this cute little invite I designed based on the theme Pinwheels & Pearls! Pinwheels are very in right now, from kids birthdays to baby showers they are everywhere!

Are they not just adorable?  First you need to print out your invitations. I bought the purple scalloped cards at Staples and printed them at home on my printer.   Next you need to get scrapbook paper in coordinating colors. It helps if there is different designs on both sides of the paper. Michaels sells great scrapbook paper pads.  This will be used for your pinwheels. You will also need lollipop sticks, Tacky craft glue, little stick on pearls, 3 hole punch, and brads.

You will need to cut down your scrapbook paper into small squares, or the size you want your pinwheels. Mine were just a bit smaller than a post-it note square size. Using a paper cutter makes it fast and precise.

The next step is to make your pinwheels.
Step 1) fold paper in half lengthwise, crease and unfold.
Step 2) fold paper in half width wise, crease and unfold. ( now you should have 4 quadrants)
Step3) using scissors cut on the creased lines about half way to the center of the square.
Step 4) cut at the corners half way to center.
Step 5) fold every other flap into center and 3 hole punch. Stick brad through hole to secure and keep flaps in place.

The next step is to glue your pinwheels to your invite wherever you want them to be. Then I put one tip of the lollipop stick inside a flap of the pinwheel with a little glue. and put a tiny amount of glue on stick at the top only to secure to page.  You also may need to cut down the lollipop stick so it doesn't hang off your invite.  Add pearl sticker embellishments and let dry. I glued a pearl on top of some of the brads in center of pinwheel for a different look.

Such sweet invites and very personal! I think the momma to be is very happy with them!

Butterfly Bridal Soiree

Dessert Tables are all the rage these days. If your throwing a birthday party, bridal shower, or baby shower a dessert table should most definitely be on your list of party decor and to-do's.

This is a Dessert Table for a Bridal Shower that I recently co-hosted with my fabulous cousin, and amazing partner in party planning Ms. Kara.  We strive constantly to bring new and cute ideas to our family get-togethers, and this year there are many celebrations. We pour over our most loved blogs and also rack our creative minds to get ideas for our events. This was our first time doing a dessert table.

Our theme was "Modern Butterfly" with a color palette of green, white, and splashes of pink.
These are mini "Red Velvet Cupcakes" with Cream Cheese Frosting that I made. I found the cute little edible sugar butterflies on Etsy.com

Kara made these adorable "popcorn cones" and we filled with plain popcorn and kettle corn.
She also made these scrumptious White Chocolate Raspberry Tartlets (below). I will have to post recipe because they are super easy and so yummy...

We also had green and white M&M's, and green chocolate covered sunflower seeds!

The shower was for about 26 people. We choose to do a more formal sit down served meal. A lot of work but very worth it.  We set all the tables with china and vintage silver.
Each place setting also had one of these napkins with a menu and white wishing butterfly.

We served Lemonade , Iced Tea and Champagne.
These spout glass servers are so much fun, they add a great touch to any event.

Tissue Paper Pom Pom's are also very popular right now.  Martha Stewart has a great little kit at Michaels. We hung in groups of three with two small and one big under the umbrellas.

I think the Bride was very happy with her day! We sure enjoyed planning and spoiling her!
